Mitokh Dapeinu will meet for its next session on Thursday, September 18 at 6:30 PM EST. For the special time of Elul, we’re welcoming Aisha “Asher” Coh, MD of Intergenerational Jews, to guide a multimedia session entitled, “Utilizing the Framework of Visual Syntax of the Feminine: From the Soaring Heights of the Al-Aqsa Mosque to the Subaltern and Archived.” This session will feature music, video, and scholarly articles.

We ask that participants review Coh’s introduction (4 pages), two scholarly articles (50 pages), and two brief videos.

Mitokh Dapeinu will meet for its next session on Thursday, July 31 at 7:00 PM EST. We’ll be discussing three brief articles: "Jews in Tunisia Confront the Alliance israélite universelle (AIU)" by Richard Cohen, "The Racial Politics of the AIU" by Rachel Baron-Bloch, and "Oriental, Feminist, Orientalist: The New Jewish Woman and the AIU" by Frances Milano. In this short schedule of 50 pages, this session opens discussion on the intersections of imperialism, Orientalism, race, and feminism.

We ask that participants read all three articles and prepare at least one discussion question. If you’re unable to finish the entire selection, please read the conclusions to each article (pages 39-40 for Cohen, 138-140 for Baron-Bloch, and 321-322 for Milano).

Mitokh Dapeinu will meet for its next session on Thursday, June 26 at 7:00 PM EST. We’ll be discussing the novel Sabriya: Damascus Bitter Sweet by Ulfat Idlibi. The story within a story centers on Damascus during the Great Syrian Revolt. Following the coming-of-age of a young Syrian woman, we discover the unique perspectives and contributions of women to Syrian culture, society, and resistance.

We ask that participants read the entire novel and prepare a discussion question. If you’re unable to finish the novel, please read the following pages from the English translation linked in the confirmation email: 22-25, 38-48, 70-82, 91-96, 111-116, 131-141, 185.

We’ll be discussing two articles: "An Imperial Entanglement: Anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, and Colonialism" by Ethan Katz and "'Islamic Anti-Semitism' in Historical Discourse" by Daniel Schroeter. Both articles were part of a 2018 American Historical Review roundtable called "Rethinking Anti-Semitism."

This compact family saga follows the retired bureaucrat Hamid Burhan and his kin through the tumultuous events of 20th century Egypt up through the Camp David Accords. Editions are available in Hebrew, Arabic, and English.
