Mitokh Dapeinu will meet for its next session on Thursday, September 18 at 6:30 PM EST. For the special time of Elul, we’re welcoming Aisha “Asher” Coh, MD of Intergenerational Jews, to guide a multimedia session entitled, “Utilizing the Framework of Visual Syntax of the Feminine: From the Soaring Heights of the Al-Aqsa Mosque to the Subaltern and Archived.” This session will feature music, video, and scholarly articles.

We ask that participants review Coh’s introduction (4 pages), two scholarly articles (50 pages), and two brief videos.

Mitokh Dapeinu will meet for its next session on Thursday, July 31 at 7:00 PM EST. We’ll be discussing three brief articles: "Jews in Tunisia Confront the Alliance israélite universelle (AIU)" by Richard Cohen, "The Racial Politics of the AIU" by Rachel Baron-Bloch, and "Oriental, Feminist, Orientalist: The New Jewish Woman and the AIU" by Frances Milano. In this short schedule of 50 pages, this session opens discussion on the intersections of imperialism, Orientalism, race, and feminism.

We ask that participants read all three articles and prepare at least one discussion question. If you’re unable to finish the entire selection, please read the conclusions to each article (pages 39-40 for Cohen, 138-140 for Baron-Bloch, and 321-322 for Milano).

Mitokh Dapeinu will meet for its next session on Sunday, May 18 at 7:00 PM EST. We’ll be discussing two articles: "An Imperial Entanglement: Anti-Semitism, Islamophobia, and Colonialism" by Ethan Katz and "'Islamic Anti-Semitism' in Historical Discourse" by Daniel Schroeter. Both articles were part of a 2018 American Historical Review roundtable called "Rethinking Anti-Semitism."

We ask that participants read both articles and prepare a discussion question. If you’re unable to finish the entire selection, please read the conclusions to each article (pages 1208-1209 for Katz, and 1188-1189 for Schroeter).

Mitokh Dapeinu will meet for its next session on Sunday, March 23 at 7:00 PM EST. We’ll be discussing the novel The Final Hour by Naguib Mahfouz (1982). This compact family saga follows the retired bureaucrat Hamid Burhan and his kin through the tumultuous events of 20th century Egypt up through the Camp David Accords. Editions are available in Hebrew, Arabic, and English.

Mitokh Dapeinu will meet via Zoom on December 22 at 7:30 PM EST. We'll discuss three chapters from The Sultan's Communists: Moroccan Jews and the Politics of Belonging by Alma Rachel Heckman (2021).

We are thrilled to host Moran Barir, who will lead Shoresh members in a practice-based workshop that activates political imagination as a tool in the struggle for change. In the workshop, we will exercise our collective imagination while forming a positive and desirable future-oriented vision that is free from the limiting restrictions of current reality. Encountering the future we wish to create, we will receive the information needed to fine-tune actions on our way to this new political horizon.

Moran Barir is a group facilitator, filmmaker, and activist. She has a bachelor's degree in Cinema and Communication from Tel Aviv University, a master's degree in Community Development from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, as well as a certification in guiding conflict groups from The School for Peace in Neve Shalom. Barir works at the School for Peace and serves as the chairperson of the board of directors of Zochrot.

The workshop will be held in Hebrew due to its relevance within the Israeli-Palestinian context. An English translation will be available upon request. However, participants are encouraged to share in whichever language they feel most comfortable.

We offer this workshop with the hope that it will further our political education and practice, which are guided by abolitionist, antifascist, and feminist principles.

2011 DocuDrama 80m

A work of hybrid cinema in which Israeli actors perform a series of verbatim testimonies sourced from Palestinians subjected to Israeli atrocity, and from Israeli perpetrators. Delivered entirely in Hebrew, direct to camera, and against evocative empty landscapes. Director Shlomi Elkabetz has described his intention "to turn the viewer into a witness. To turn the language of the occupier, my language, Hebrew, into his own nightmare."

Screening is in person, free and open to all. RSVP limited due to capacity.

The Open Forum is a broad, member-wide discussion. It's an opportunity for all members to share their thoughts, ideas, and questions with each other.

• During the Orientation (11:00-11:30 PDT, 1:00-1:30 CT, 2-2:30 EST), you will have the chance to hear from every working group about what they are working on and how to get involved.
• The Open Forum (11:30-12:30 PDT, 1:30-2:30 CT, 2:30-2:30 EST) is an opportunity for all members to share their thoughts/ideas/questions and engage in broader discussions as an organization. We want to hear from YOU!

We founded Shoresh to make our voice heard against the war and the Israeli apartheid regime, but also because we felt alone, and we wanted to be in community with Israeli anti-Zionists. A year later, we will get together to commemorate the anniversary to the 10/7 massacre, to mourn together and to strengthen each other, and to continue our work against the genocide in Gaza and the invasion of Lebanon.
We will meet on Sunday 10/6 in Prospect Park for a memorial and internal processing space. Only Shoresh members will be there: it'll be a place for us to be together and process.

We'll meet by the Prospect Park Pavilion which is close to the Lincoln Road and Ocean Ave entrance (same area we had the picnic at, but turn left at the entrance)
